How to Brew Geisha Coffee the Right Way | Updated in 2023

The fact that you can pay $60 in 2023 for a small cup of Panama Geisha coffee (aka. Gesha coffee) in some parts of the world says all that needs to be said for its desirability. It’s not quite as expensive if you brew your own, but is still pound-for-pound one of the priciest coffees in existence. It has been breaking price records year after year.

In which case, it pays to get the brewing process right. Rather than just tossing a cup of Gesha coffee together, a little patience and precision go a long way.

With this in mind, here’s a brief overview of what you simply must do when brewing with Panamanian Geisha coffee beans at home:

1) Store Coffee Beans Properly

First of all, don’t make the mistake of letting your stockpile of Geisha coffee beans deteriorate too quickly. Appropriate storage is something that should be taken seriously, which can be as simple as using an airtight container and store coffee beans in a cool, dark and dry location.

2) Grind With Care at The Last Minute

Only ever grind the exact quantity of coffee you need, each time you brew. Coffee grounds lose their fragrance, flavor and quality like lightning – a tragic waste with gourmet coffee. In addition, it’s essential to use a good burr coffee grinder to achieve the perfect consistency. Drip coffee brewing calls for a medium grind, keep things a bit coarser for a French press and grind finely for espresso coffee.

3) Pay Attention to Ratios

The general rule of thumb is to use approximately 17g (i.e. 0.6oz) of coffee grounds for every 300ml (approx. 10 US fl. oz) of water. However, some prefer their Gesha coffee way stronger or weaker than this. It’s up to you to find your perfect ratio, so be sure to take notes as you experiment. Rather than making things up as you go along, make the effort to accurately weigh and measure the coffee and water you use. It may seem like a mundane task, but is more than justified when dealing with an exclusive specialty coffee like this.

4) Make Sure the Water isn’t Too Hot

You can take things as seriously as you like with a thermometer and aim for an ideal water temperature of 92-96 degrees Celcius (198-205 degrees Fahrenheit), but it isn’t strictly necessary. As an alternative, you can simply give your freshly boiled water one minute to cool slightly, before adding it to your coffee grounds. Boiling water should be avoided at all costs, as it will burn the grounds and result in a bitter flavor. Unpleasant at the best of times – even worse when brewing with premium Geisha coffee.

5) Use Filtered Water

This often makes all the difference in the world to a good cup of coffee.  Particularly if you live in a hard water area, it is essential to use filtered water to ensure as many impurities as possible are removed. Bottled water is also an option, if possible with a pH level of around 7.

6) Skip the Additives

Last up, Panama Geisha coffee beans really should be enjoyed 100% untainted. The addition of creamers, syrups and other additives will take away from the rich aroma and fabulous flavor of the coffee itself. If you really can’t live without your arsenal of additives, Panama Geisha coffee beans might not be the ideal coffee for you!
