Valentine’s Day Coffee Recipes - Chocolate Irish Coffee Pots
Sticking with our Valentine’s Day gifts theme, we’re today sharing another of our favorite super-simple recipes for Valentine’s Day. One that’s strictly for grown-ups, these chocolate Irish coffee pots contain a dash of Irish Cream, which can be substituted for any kind of cream liqueur your fancy.
As usual, we strongly recommend attempting this recipe only with the highest-quality coffee you can lay your hands on. If you have some Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee beans lying around, they’ll be right at home in this recipe.
And just for the record, we (sadly) cannot take credit for this recipe, either. It was cooked up and shared by Helen Jessup, who knows exactly how to take a handful of simple ingredients (except for the Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee beans, of course) and make them into something amazing.
One of the nicest Valentine’s Day ideas, these chocolate Irish coffee pots are also amazing for any other special occasion and are just the thing for the festive season.
Here’s what you’ll need to put them together:
- 75g (2.7oz) of dark chocolate, good quality
- 1egg, separated
- 1 tbsp of caster sugar
- 30ml (1fl oz) of Irish cream liqueur
- 25ml (0.8fl oz) of espresso, cooled
- 30ml (1fl oz) of double cream
- coffee beans, chocolate-coated
Method
- Carefully and slowly melt the broken up chocolate in a bowl, either in a microwave on a low setting or over a second bowl of boiling water.
- Once melted, give the chocolate around 5 minutes to start cooling and hardening.
- Beat the egg yolk vigorously with the sugar, before adding the mixture to the melted chocolate.
- Pour in a measure of Irish Cream, or any other type of cream liqueur you prefer.
- Add the cream and the espresso, continuously until the mixture is thick and luxurious.
- Whisk the white of the egg in a separate bowl until stiff peaks form, before folding very carefully into the chocolate mixture.
- Pour the final product into glasses or coffee cups, then place in the fridge for at least an hour or two before serving.
- Present your chocolate Irish coffee pots decorated with a few chocolate coated coffee beans and a light dusting of cocoa powder, if available.
Ideal for all types of special occasions, these chocolate Irish coffee pots can be made fairly far in advance and brought out when needed. A few hours ahead of time or even the day before, you can set a bunch of them aside in the fridge to keep things nice and easy.
The Irish Cream is purely optional and can be replaced with just about any non-alcoholic alternative ingredient you like. There’s also the option of using decaffeinated coffee instead of regular, if you’d prefer to remove that quintessential energy-jolt from the equation.
