Blue Gold: How to Avoid Ruining Your Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee

jamaican blue mountain coffee, jamaican coffee

So you’ve finally taken the plunge and bought yourself a batch of Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee beans. They’re the proudest purchase you’ve made on your gourmet coffee journey so far and you want to make the most of them.

The question being - how easy (or otherwise) is it to brew a premium cup of Jamaican coffee?

Contrary to popular belief, it’s not nearly as difficult as you might imagine. In the kitchen, cooking with ultra-premium ingredients usually means handling them with extreme care and attention from start to finish. With Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee, it’s not quite the same.

In fact, brewing the ultimate cup of Jamaican coffee simply means avoiding a handful of common mistakes. Armed with something as simple as a decent French Press, you’ll soon be on your way to the most decadent cup of coffee you’ve ever concocted at home.

Just be sure to steer clear of the following, if you’d prefer not to ruin your Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee:

Take Care with Grinding

First up, think carefully about your chosen brewing method and pay close attention to the grinding process. Depending on whether you plan to use a French Press, a standard filter coffee method or a more advanced machine, you’ll need to create the right coarseness accordingly. Make no mistake about it - one size most certainly does not fit all!  If you want to do your Jamaican coffee justice, grind with due care and attention.

Watch Your Water Temperatures

You don’t need anything particularly sophisticated to gauge the perfect temperature for the water. You can use a thermometer if you like, but it’s far easier to simply boil the water you need and give it 60 seconds to cool slightly.  By which time, it will be hot enough to get the job done, but not so hot as to scold the grounds and create a bitter brew. Using boiling water straight from the kettle could ruin your Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee, so watch your water temperatures.

Use Filtered Water

Sticking with the same theme, filtered water will ensure you gain maximum enjoyment from your Jamaican coffee. Tap water tends to contain various minerals and elements that have their own unique aromas and flavours. All of which stand to get in the way of the aroma and flavour profile of your Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee. So just to be on the safe side, stick with filtered or bottled water where possible.

Avoid Adulteration

Last but not least, if you plan on enjoying Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee to its fullest, you can forget about creative coffee recipes. In fact, if you’re planning to add mountains of foam, flavourings and other additives to your cup, there’s no point bothering with ultra-premium coffee like this. The very best Jamaican coffee is the coffee that’s allowed to shine on its own, with absolutely no additives or extras required!
