It’s one of the most commonly asked questions in the world of coffee, yet also one of the trickiest to answer:

Which are the best coffee beans in the world in 2023?

It’s a tricky issue for the simple reason that everyone has their own unique personal tastes and preferences. What one person considers to be the best coffee in the world could be an entirely unpalatable coffee bean to someone else. Most types of quality whole bean coffee have their fans and followers, but to say that any one given coffee really is the best coffee bean in the world is bound to stir up a certain amount of controversy.

Still, if you based things like this on facts, demand, popularity and reputation, certain whole bean coffees definitely qualify among the best coffee beans in the world. These are the types of coffee beans you really don’t need to be an expert to get a kick out of – they’re the best coffee beans in the world because they are simply spectacular.

They may pack a punch price-wise, but one taste of truly world-class specialty coffee and you know it’s worth every penny.

So putting the whole issue of personal opinion to one side just for a moment, here’s a quick rundown of just a few types of coffee bean that are widely considered to be the best coffee beans in the world:

HAWAII KONA COFFEE

Grown in unique climatic conditions in the equally unique volcanic soil of the Mauna Loa and Hualalai Volcanoes, this stunning Hawaiian coffee really is the stuff dreams are made of. Bursting with zest and yet beautifully balanced, the moment the water hits the grounds is the moment you know you’re onto something special. There’s a distinct spiciness to the aftertaste that makes you want more, along with a buttery smoothness in the mouth that’s decadent in the extreme. Once again, this is absolutely the kind of exclusive specialty coffee you really don’t need to be an expert to enjoy every drop of.

JAMAICAN BLUE MOUNTAIN COFFEE

One of our personal favourites, Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is extraordinarily sought-after and available in extremely short supply, because 65-80% of annual production goes directly to Japan. True Blue Mountain Coffee can only be grown in a tiny mountainous region at around 3000-5600 feet (900-1700 meters) above sea level, which like its counterpart above demands rich and fertile volcanic soil. The result is a truly explosive coffee in terms of both flavours and aromas alike. Produced in comparatively tiny quantities in the first place, it doesn’t help that most Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee produced every year is immediately scooped up by the Japanese market!

PANAMA GEISHA COFFEE (aka Gesha Coffee)

Last but not least, this absolute treasure of coffee originated in Ethiopia, though has since become associated with Panama, where it is primarily grown today.  This incredible whole bean coffee produces the most extraordinarily fruity flavour on the palate, with hits of guava, pineapple, peach, berries and an unmistakable note of bergamot. If you’re a fan of Earl Grey, you’ll be well and truly in your element with the unique Panamanian Geisha coffee!
