Refillable Coffee Capsules: Worth Checking Out?

coffee pods, coffee capsules, nespresso pods, nespresso capsules

In the UK and across much of the world, Nespresso pods and branded coffee capsules in general are skyrocketing in popularity. In fact, they’ve become no less than a way of life for tens of millions of coffee fans.

The last couple of years have seen a new wave of original Nespresso capsules (and compatible Nespresso capsules) hit the market, courtesy of gourmet and artisan coffee producers. As a result, it’s no longer necessary to stick with just a few types of generic coffee if you choose to go with Nespresso pods. Or any other coffee pods, for that matter.

But while all this has been happening, a growing number of industrious designers have been experimenting with refillable coffee capsules. As the name suggests, refillable coffee capsules can be emptied and refilled pretty much indefinitely.

The question being – do they actually work? And if they do, are they worth checking out?

From a purely objective perspective, here’s a brief overview of some of the advantages and disadvantages of refillable coffee capsules:

Advantages of Refillable Coffee Pods

1) Choose Your Own Coffee

First of all, using refillable coffee capsules means being able to fill them with absolutely any coffee you fancy from any producer. Rather than sticking with what’s available on the shelves, you can fill your Nespresso capsules with just about anything going.

2) More Economical

The fact that you are using the coffee pods repeatedly means you stand to save significant amounts of money. Cash you can then reinvest in more elaborate and exclusive coffees to try out.

3) Environmentally Friendly

Of course, it’s no secret that the number of non-recyclable coffee capsules being thrown away worldwide is spiralling out of control. With refillable coffee pods, there’s nothing to throw away or recycle as the device is reusable.

Disadvantages of Refillable Coffee Pods

1) Inconsistencies

Unfortunately, we’ve not yet reached a point in time where refillable coffee pods are 100% reliable or consistent. You can’t always necessarily count on perfect results from all refillable coffee pods.

2) More Effort Required

In addition, it takes at least a little more effort to grind coffee beans, load refillable coffee capsules, empty them and so on than it does to use disposable coffee capsules.

3) Tricky to Clean

It’s also worth noting that refillable coffee capsules can also be somewhat tricky to keep clean and hygienic. Washing and drying them properly often turns out to be the biggest challenge of all, as most are not so user-friendly.

4) Worth Checking Out?

In a nutshell, the answer is yes – refillable coffee capsules are definitely worth checking out. They can be economical, environmentally friendly and capable of producing a great cup of coffee. Whether they represent a permanent alternative to traditional Nespresso pods is up to you to decide, but there’s really nothing to lose by giving them a shot.
