Hario V60 Coffee Makers: Is Price Really Important?

One of the biggest benefits of the Hario V60 brewing method is the extent to which you get to control so many different variables. Brewing coffee at home is all about experimenting until you find the perfect recipe and formula to suit your tastes.

With V60 coffee, you can make as many adjustments as you like to the quantity of coffee you use, the coarseness of the grounds, the duration of the extraction process and so on. All building towards that one elusive formula for the ultimate cup of coffee.

In any case, V60 coffee is renowned for its clean, clear and crisp taste, enabling you to get the best out of all types of coffee beans. Not to mention, the fact that it is also one of the simplest brewing methods there has ever been, requiring no specialist skill whatsoever.

A Wide Variety of Price Points

Set your sights on a Hario V60 to add to your collection and one thing becomes immediately apparent:

These things are available at a wildly different range of price points.

At one end of the market, you have the V60 devices (or third-party branded approximations thereof) that are available for around the €10 mark. At the opposite end, you have those that sell for €100 or more.

Understandably, you then start to question the extent to which price is important. Do these huge differences in price mean that the more expensive models on the market are capable of producing superior results? Are you likely to regret picking up a lower-priced model, if doing so means compromising the quality of the coffee you brew?

The answer, as with most things, depends on who you ask. But from a strictly logical standpoint, there are at least a couple of points of reason that support  both arguments.

Yes – Price Matters

As for the argument behind picking up a premium device, there are one or two things to bear in mind here. The first of which is build quality – not all coffee brewing gadgets are designed to stand the test of time. If you would prefer to buy a V60 coffee maker just once, it needs to be of decent enough quality.

Secondly, it’s inadvisable to pick up a cheap knock-off of the original Hario V60, which could be manufactured from all manner of questionable materials. When considering long-term cost effectiveness, even the more expensive V60 devices are pretty cheap overall.

No – Price is Inconsequential

At the same time, there’s no requirement to spend a small fortune on a V60, in order to brew a fantastic cup of coffee. In many instances, the price you see is attributed to nothing more than the stylishness and elaborateness of the device in question.

Truth is, a basic Hario V60 made by the device’s original manufacturer will produce just as good results as a V60 costing three, four or five times as much.  It’s therefore entirely up to you whether you go for something more premium, but doing so isn’t necessary to ensure superb and consistent results.
