For a variety of reasons, brewing coffee using cold water results in an entirely different brew. The higher the temperature of the water, the greater its potential impact on the grounds. First and foremost, the science behind the cold brew coffee method makes for a genuinely superior flavour. This is because rather than forcing as much flavour as possible out of the grounds as quickly as possible with intense heat, cold brewing involves steeping coffee grounds in water for a minimum of 12 hours. This in turn results in a significantly more condensed flavour profile, while at the same time eliminating any trace of bitterness. It’s the heat of the water added to coffee grounds that often results in the bitter elements that can be somewhat overpowering. Cold brewing ensures that your specialty coffee can be tasted in all its blissful glory with zero bitterness.
The fact that cold brew coffee is often sold for a comparatively high price is one of the biggest jokes of the third wave coffee movement. The reason being that by a pretty considerable margin, it is also one of the easiest coffees to make. You measure the required amount of cold water and coffee grounds, add them to a receptacle, place them in the fridge and leave them for at least 12 to 24 hours. Best of all, you can make tons of the stuff in advance and keep it fresh for a few days at least. Minimal effort, maximum flavour and endless versatility. If you’re genuinely into cold brew coffee therefore, we’d highly recommend getting into the DIY option!
Last but not least, you don’t need any fancy equipment or supplies whatsoever to make the most outstanding cold brew coffee in the world. Rather than spending your cash on overly complex devices, you can instead increase your specialty coffee (aka speciality coffee) budget and enjoy more of the good stuff. You don’t even have to pay for the heating of the water, as would be the case with any other kind of hot coffee. Get things right in terms of the coarseness of your grounds and the weights/measurements you work with and you will probably be astonished by the results.
