Chemex Coffee-Making: Fad or Fab?

chemex, chemex coffee, gourmet coffee, best coffee beans in the world

To label the Chemex coffee maker anything close to a fad is to miss the mark entirely. After all, a device that’s been around for more than 80 years can’t realistically be called a fad.

While the popularity of the Chemex coffee-making system may have peaked relatively recently, it was actually invented in the 1940s.  A chemist by the name of Peter Schlumbohm came up with the simple yet effective design, which he called "The Chemist’s way of making coffee.”

Describing the mechanism of the Chemex system, he stated how “the funnel of the Chemex creates ideal hydrostatic conditions for the unique Chemex extraction."

Fascinating stuff, particularly given how the Chemex is one of the simplest devices ever conceived for brewing a fantastic cup of coffee.

What Makes the Chemex System so Popular?

All well and good, but what is it about Chemex that makes it such a standout among coffee connoisseurs? When compared to the countless other coffee brewing methods we now have access to, what makes Chemex so special?

As with most things, the answer depends entirely on who you ask. But there are several major advantages to using the Chemex system that are undeniable, such as the following:

  1. Simplicity. This is perhaps the primary point of appeal for most, as the Chemex system is one of the most straightforward of all coffee-brewing methods. Even if you have no real knowledge or experience of gourmet coffee brewing, it’s easy to produce barista-quality results in no time.
  2. Speed. Speaking of which, it takes a matter of seconds to pop the required bits and pieces together and create a cup of quality coffee. The same can also be said for the cleanup process, which is practically nonexistent with Chemex.
  3. Taste. As explained so eloquently by Peter Schlumbohm, the unique funnel shape of the Chemex (apparently) creates the perfect conditions for efficient extraction. We’re not in a position to comment on the science, but the exceptional taste of Chemex coffee is hard to deny.
  4. Lifespan. With just a moderate amount of tender loving care, a Chemex carafe has the potential to last a lifetime. There’s nothing particularly complex or intricate about it, meaning there’s little to nothing that can go wrong.  Just as long as you don’t drop it, you’ll be enjoying your Chemex for many years (or even decades) to come.
  5. Control. Being able to take control of every aspect of the brewing process opens the door to a world of experimentation. Coffee quantities, water temperatures, the speed and motion of the pour - all fun to play around with when brewing Chemex coffee.
  6. Sophistication. Of course, there’s also much to be said for the gorgeous looks of a sophisticated Chemex carafe. The perfect visual addition to any kitchen, office or anywhere else.
