A Quick and Easy Recipe for Coffee Rub with Geisha Coffee
In one of our recent posts, we touched upon the delights of experimenting with coffee in the kitchen. During which, we mentioned how fantastically versatile a good coffee rub can be.
Rubs like these can be great for giving your used ground coffee a second lease of life. They’re ideal for getting the best possible value for money out of your Panama Geisha coffee beans, rather than tossing them in the trash.
Not that you have to use Gesha coffee to create a killer rub, but quality coffee = quality results.
In any case, this particular rub could not be easier to put together and is versatile in the extreme. It is particularly fantastic as a marinade for steaks, but can also be great for adding flavor to slow-cooked brisket or pork.
Plus, once you’ve got to grips with the basic recipe, you can experiment to your heart’s content with additions and substitutions.
Best Ground Coffee vs Instant Coffee
One quick note before getting started, with regard to the type of coffee you decide to use. Reusing the best ground coffee like Geisha coffee comes highly recommended, as chances are they will still have a ton of flavor left over.
Plus, anything you can do to get the most out of your Panama Geisha coffee beans simply makes sense.
But if you are using coffee grounds, you will need to ensure the most of the rub is removed from the meat before grilling. This is to prevent the grounds from burning and becoming bitter, due to the high temperatures. They will have done their job imparting plenty of flavor after a few hours anyway, so can be removed before grilling.
Rubs made with instant coffee don’t need to be removed, as the coffee will dissolve into the meat and therefore will not burn.
Homemade Coffee Rub Recipe
It takes less than 5 minutes to put together this homemade coffee rub, after which it will stay good for up to one month in a suitable airtight container (if using instant coffee to make a dry rub).
If using wet coffee grounds to make this rub, give the mixture a good stir and allow to infuse for a couple of hours. This will ensure the best possible distribution of flavor, after adding it to the meat.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 2 Tbsp coarse salt
- 2 Tbsp Geisha coffee or instant coffee
- 2 Tbsp garlic powder
- 2 Tbsp smoked paprika
- 1 Tbsp pepper
- 1 Tbsp crushed coriander
- 1 Tbsp onion powder
- 1 Tsp chilli powder
- 1/2 Tsp cayenne
As you may have figured out, putting together this amazing rub for meat is as easy as simply combining all of the ingredients together in a bowl. After which, you can apply a liberal amount to your favorite cut of meat, before leaving for at least a couple of hours to infuse.
Again, the dry version of this marinade can be stored for up to a month in an airtight container. If using wet grounds to impart some serious flavor into your meat, be sure to remove most of the rub before high-temperature cooking like grilling.
